What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind characterized by a focused attention in which you feel very
calm and relaxed. Regardless of how and to what degree you respond, most
people describe the experience as very pleasant.
Hypnosis is usually
accompanied by a deep relaxation (physically, mentally, and
emotionally), a heightened awareness and focus, and by an open
responsiveness to suggestion. Hypnosis - or better said the trance state
that it supports - is a perfectly normal, natural state of mind that
everyone is in every day of their lives to some extent.
This relaxed, highly focused state of mind generates the brainwave state
known as alpha. When you fall asleep at night, alpha is the state of
mind you are in right before you fall asleep. You can also be in a deep
state of alpha right after you fall asleep before you drift down into
the theta brainwave state. The theta brainwave state is the state of mind where sleep occurs. Alpha
is the state of mind most associated with hypnosis.
What is
hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool. Hypnotherapy
deals with problems at the subconscious level when a client is unable to
solve a problem at the conscious level. Hypnotherapy can be used to
treat addictions; overcome phobias; relieve stress; and help clients
achieve positive attitudes about themselves.
A trance provides a better base for many therapeutic techniques. Trance is a very natural
state. Many approved methods are even more effective when carried out in a trance state
because the whole experience then becomes more intense.
Do I give up my free
will when I am in a hypnotic state?
You are fully aware of what is going on. In fact, you are more focused
on your surroundings and what is going on in the here-and-now.
When I am in a
hypnotic state does the hypnotherapist have complete control over me?
You are fully aware of what the hypnotherapist is saying. Your conscious
mind is present and you can come out of a trance anytime you choose.
Your subconscious mind is also very protective of you and would not
accept any suggestions that would violate your moral or ethical codes.
You can reject whatever is being said to you. You can actually lie in
hypnosis.
Can someone
hypnotize me against my will?
The answer is no. You have to be fully receptive to be hypnotized. You
could have some resistance, but if you do not want to be hypnotized, you
will not be.
Can anyone be
hypnotized?
Pretty much anyone can be hypnotized as long as they are willing. Since
hypnosis is a natural state of mind which people are in every day,
anyone of normal intelligence who chooses to be hypnotized can be
hypnotized. There may be a few exceptions such as people on certain
medications or people with neurological problems. Those who claim they
can't be hypnotized are simply choosing not to be hypnotized.
Will I forget or
remember what happened during the session?
if there isn't a good reason to utilize amnesia you can remember all details of a session, and certainly everything you
need to remember.
However, because you are in a drowsy state, your memory of some details
may fade rather quickly as often happens with dreams.
You might remember more details pertaining to the session
afterwards. Most people go through a natural integration phase.
What does hypnosis feel
like?
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that everyone experiences
several times a day.
It is like being in a pleasant daydreaming state. Or like that wonderful
deep relaxation you feel right before dropping off to sleep. And since
the conscious mind is in the background resting a bit while you're doing
hypnosis, you can feel quite refreshed and revitalized after a session.
It is a special state of the mind in which the body
is relaxed and the mind is able to pay attention to inner experience
without criticism or judgment. You may have experienced these light
trance-like states of mind during a long drive, meditation, watching a
movie, or just daydreaming.
Because it feels
wonderful to be in deep trance, many clients enjoy being in trance so
much that they are curious if there are also other ways to utilize it.
How can hypnosis help
me?
Hypnosis is just a tool to create better suggestibility or bypass the
analytical mind. Hypnosis helps you get in touch with more conscious
awareness and sense of your body. Hypnosis is effective in addressing
relationship issues, self-esteem, addictions, health issues, stress and
anxiety, and other unwanted habits and behaviors.
Many approved methods are even more effective
in a trance state. Trance makes the therapeutic process much more
intense.
Do I have
to go into a deep trance state?
Only a light to medium hypnosis state is needed for hypnosis to be
effective. Good results can occur with a light state. The most important
factor in an effective hypnosis session is the level of desire of the
client. If a person's desire is strong and they have a willingness to
enter into a relaxed hypnotic state, the chances of it being a success are excellent.
However deep trance states induced with techniques like Deep
Hypnobalancing can be astonishingly effective for example when the goal is
to regenerate as fast as possible.
Is hypnosis safe?
In over two hundred years of recorded hypnosis history, there is no
documented case of anyone being hurt with hypnosis. Hypnosis is as safe
as daydreaming!
Do I have to believe
in hypnosis in order for it to work for me?
Not really. You don't have to believe in hypnosis in order for it to
work for you, but you do have to be willing to give it a chance in order
for it to work. Wonderful results have been achieved by people who
didn't believe in hypnosis. And it's not unusual for people to believe
that they weren't actually hypnotized when they were.
Is it possible to
getting lost in trance?
No. Firstly, you are in a perfectly natural state of mind and
conscious the whole time. Even if you were to drift off to sleep, you
would simply wake up just like you would from a nap.
